The Last Lecture

The Last Lecture

This day I’ll introduce you about The Last Lecture Yes, I think that interesting .

The Last Lecture5
The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch is an autobiography of Pausch’s life. It has some assistance from his friend and superior, Jeffrey Zaslow. Pausch starts off his book, right into the issue, which is that of his stages of pancreatic cancer. He is a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, as he was supposed to give his “last lecture” for the university, something that a lot of professors do, he never thought that it could very well be his last lecture of life as well. So Pausch decided to make his Last Lecture about his life, and enjoying every single minute of what he has accomplished and how others should do the very same thing. He entitled the lecture, “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams.” This was how he approached his speech and he had it sectioned into different dreams he had as a child and he explained how somehow, someway in his life has accomplished those dreams. Whether indirectly or directly, he did it. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in early 2006 and died just this past July, 2008. He has three children, two young boys and a baby girl, and a wife, Jai. Jai was his backbone throughout everything Randy had to endure. He had also always said that part of the reason he was doing his “last lecture” was so that his kids could see how great of a man he was and just how many people loved him. He really was loved by so many people because he had helped so many out and gave recommendations for his students to make sure they the opportunities that he was given. The book doesn’t end the way you would assume, with death, but it ends with a life lesson. The lesson is to enjoy your life and fulfill your dreams. Randy wanted people to love him for the life he lived but not because he was dead or dying.
This book did not have very much detail within his cancer development. He made subtle remarks about how it was progressing and how Jai, his wife, had been there to help him get his chemotherapy and make sure the children did not worry too much about their father. I don’t think I would use this book in particular to describe cancer and its biology but maybe the way it affects certain people. I think that cancer affected Randy Pausch in a positive way, if that’s even possible. Positive maybe too harsh of a word but it definitely affected him in a good way. He learned to love and appreciate and wanted to share that with the people around him as well as the people he could not reach. So overall, cancer, on an emotional level, this book reaches that aspect but on a biology level, it does lack.
Personally, this book did affect me. I read most of it while I was in Canada. My best friend’s grandmother was obsessed with this book and insisted that I read it as well, and that I did. I read mostly in the early morning on the hot rocks that faced the lake. I was so impressed with how beautiful Canada was that sometimes I would just watch the shine of the sun on the waters. I realized that there was a definite connection for why I was reading this very book while on my first out-of-country experience. I was learning my first “life lesson ” via Randy Pausch. He was teaching me to be thankful and joyous I have these opportunities. I am thankful and I am thankful it took a book to help me come to that realization. I would recommend this book to every single person over the age of 16 because once you hit that age, your responsibilities only seem to grow. I would have to say this book was an escape for me and I really think that anyone can let it be anything they wish for it to be. Overall, this book hit a special, sensitive spot for me and I am very glad that I have read it.
—Brittany Billings, Student of Andrea Stonebraker

Dont be afraid to dream5
I first heard about this lecture from my wife. A friend had sent her the video link and she sent it to me. I watched this and was so moved by Dr. Randy Pausch’s lecture and outlook on life that I had to buy his book. Even though he only had a short time to live during the writing of his lecture and subsequent book, he never gave up on life. There are so many important points in this book that we can all learn from that I have read this book three time now, underlining the points I want my wife and friends to learn. Dr. Randy Pausch was an amazing man and my prayers go out to his family, but his legecy will live on. I strongly recomend parent read this to your children.
And remember
Dream as if you will live forever. Live as of you will die tomorrow.

The Last Lecture5
I thought this book was excellent. This was my selection for my monthly book club and I felt I had given the other members a “gift” by having them read this book. I want to go back with a yellow highlighter and mark some of the parts that I thought were especially important. I recommend this book for all ages of people.

Product Description

“We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.”
–Randy Pausch

A lot of professors give talks titled “The Last Lecture.” Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them. And while they speak, audiences can’t help but mull the same question: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy?

When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn’t have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave–”Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams”–wasn’t about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because “time is all you have…and you may find one day that you have less than you think”). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living.

In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humor, inspiration and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.

Disappointed 2
I had high expectation for this book, but it was far less interesting than I hoped. There were many redundant passages about being one with the universe and the state of nirvana that the author, Dr. Jill Taylor, achieved. A good editor would have shaved off at least 20 pages. I found myself skimming over more than a few pages. I expected more of the science; explanations were couched in simplistic terms. Although there are descriptions of normal brain function in the beginning, the scientific discussion waned when it came to her actual situation.

After her surgery and her recovery starts, Dr. Taylor glosses over the 8 years it took her to recover to focus on the spiritual aspect of her experience. The steady stream of new-age mysticism is attributed to right-brain function, making an argument that religious/spiritual/mystical experiences are nothing more than a few extra neurons firing here and a few less firing there. And who knows, maybe they are. What might be useful to hospital workers and caregivers is her need description of how their questions, demands, and posture were experienced. She needed questions repeated slowly, not loudly. (As she noted, she wasn’t deaf, but folks would repeat a question louder as if it would make understand better.)

At the end of it, I was disappointed in this book. Even at the Kindle price of $9.99 I would recommend waiting to pick the paperback version up for less.

What did my grandmother feel after her stroke?5
25 years ago, my grandmother suffered a massive left hemisphere stroke that left her half paralyzed and unable to speak. That was a traumatic experience for me and all my family. My beloved grandma died 5 days later, probably of pneumonia. But I always feared to enter her mind during those 5 days in ICU, wondering what it would be like to be buried alive, figuratively, after a massive stroke. So I read this book with trepidation but I am glad I did because it is an enormously positive book, partly because Jill Taylor’s outcome was positive. If it hadn’t have been, the book would probably not have been written, naturally. The advice towards the end sounds a lot like what Zen masters and other spiritual teachers say, so that tantalizing link makes it more believable and also makes us wonder about spiritual experiences. The only disappointment I must voice is that there is no real practical advice for those of us who haven’t had strokes (and don’t want to have one in order to become spiritually advanced!) I know, I know… meditation. This merely proves that there is a link between brain function and spiritual states, and also proves that we as a culture are not there yet, with regards to advancing spiritually en masse. We have a long ways to go and the vehicles that can take us there are not easy to drive!

Unique view of our energy bodies5
Jill Bolte Taylor captures my attention with her view on energy fields. A must read! Read on to see what I mean. It may mean a major change in health care.

Early on in her experience with her stroke she mentions feeling fluid, flowing in a field without boundaries. She felt part of the universal energy and it was tranquil, safe and blessed. This is a woman who had diminished or no functioning in her left brain.

As she worked to get help she observed the energy of business cards as she held them. She then, after finding the “right” energy, did she match the patterns on the card to patterns on the phone. She did not recognize them as numbers. Some phone numbers she only remembered as patterns…or rhymes. When her co-worker answered the phone it was his reassuring tone/energy that let her know help was on the way. She could not understand what he was saying.

Help arrives and later a kind-hearted paramedic’s energy which is compassionate and comforting transported me to the hospital. She really appreciated his response to her. Arrival at the Emergency room was confusing with all the different energies, some good, some not so. It was difficult with all the noises, energy fields (Bodies) moving about and all the questions. What she really appreciated was when the staff connected with her by touching her gently, making eye contact, speaking slowly and softly. She knew these people were there to help her. Her request of them: “Respect me. I am in here. Come find me”.

As her treatment continued it was the “kind” energy she responded to and to their requests. If the staff person was `off energy” she wished they would leave as they were sucking her energy. She didn’t have any energy to give anyone as she began her recovery. TV was disturbing when the person in the other bed was watching anything.

After she returned home it was the greeting cards that brought joy and good energies. Her mother, who was her caregiver for several months, hung them around her apartment. They helped her heal. Visits from friends were limited or eliminated as it took too much energy to watch their lips as they spoke to her. TV, talk radio and the phone were off limits.

I find it very interesting her readings on the energies around her. Perhaps you can translate Jill’s experiences with energy to your life. What will change? Think now how you will respond to a friend or family member in the hospital. How can you support them if they are in recovery, short or long term? Jill’s recovery took eight years. If you are the patient, not just a stroke patient, how do you want to be treated? What requests can you, will you ask of your family and friends?

In the bigger picture I hope that the staff, all staff, of hospitals, assisted living, and recovery centers read this book. May they come to some understanding of the importance of meeting the patient or resident with respect from the energy point of view. If you can’t find the energy, the attitude to do this then asked to be transferred where you don’t have personal contact. It could change the health care system.

Product Description

Jill Taylor was a 37-year-old Harvard-trained brain scientist when a blood vessel exploded in her brain. Through the eyes of a curious scientist, she watched her mind deteriorate whereby she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life. Because of her understanding of the brain, her respect for the cells in her body, and an amazing mother, Jill completely recovered. In My Stroke of Insight, she shares her recommendations for recovery and the insight she gained into the unique functions of the two halves of her brain. When she lost the skills of her left brain, her consciousness shifted away from normal reality where she felt “at one with the universe.” Taylor helps others not only rebuild their brains from trauma, but helps those of us with normal brains better understand how we can consciously influence the neural circuitry underlying what we think, how we feel and how we react to life’s circumstances.

Disappointed1
I couldn’t put this book down, turning each page hoping that it would get better. It didn’t. It was boring and uneventful.

Marcia! Marcia! Marcia!5
Who knew that beneath the blonde bundle of perfection known as Marcia on the Brady Bunch aka Maureen McCormick was a web of tangled feelings and drug abuse. I can remember watching Maureen as Marcia flipping her blonde mane on the popular television show and thinking how perfect her real life must be.

The truth is revealed in Maureen’s book, “Here’s The Story”. I have to hand it to Maureen for her honesty in revealing the nitty gritty details about her life. But I also have to wonder if she will as ball player Jose Conseco who revealed all in the book, “Juiced”, come to regret her tell all.

It is refreshing to start new and obviously Maureen wrote this to get her feelings out there, but sometimes, it’s good to keep the dirt private amongst close family members and not shout it from the rooftops and in the process implicate others who were also doing drugs, etc.

Regardless, it is a very juicy tell all. You will learn behind the scenes informaton on the Brady Bunch. Find out about Maureen’s affairs and drug abuse and more. I just hope Maureen, does not regret it later.

Product Description

Marcia! Marcia! Marcia!

Marcia Brady, eldest daughter on television’s The Brady Bunch, had it all—style, looks, boys, brains, and talent. No wonder her younger sister Jan was jealous! For countless adolescents across America who came of age in the early 1970s, Marcia was the ideal American teenager. Girls wanted to be her. Boys wanted to date her. But what viewers didn’t know about the always-sunny, perfect Marcia was that offscreen, her real-life counterpart, Maureen McCormick, the young actress who portrayed her, was living a very different—and not-so-wonderful—life. Now, for the very first time, Maureen tells the shocking and inspirational true story of the beloved teen generations have invited into their living rooms—and the woman she became.

In Here’s the Story, Maureen takes us behind the scenes of America’s favorite television family, the Bradys. With poignancy and candor, she reveals the lifelong friendships, the hurtful jealousies, the offscreen romance, the loving support her television family provided during a life-or-death moment, and the inconsolable loss of a man who had been a second father. But The Brady Bunch was only the beginning. Haunted by the perfection of her television alter ego, Maureen landed on the dark side, caught up in a fast-paced, drug-fueled, star-studded Hollywood existence that ultimately led to the biggest battle of her life.

Moving from drug dens on Wonderland Avenue to wild parties at the Playboy mansion and exotic escapades on the beaches of Hawaii, this candid, hard-hitting memoir exposes a side of a beloved pop-culture icon the paparazzi missed. Yet it is also a story of remarkable success. After kicking her drug habit, Maureen battled depression, reconnected with her mother, whom she nursed through the end of her life, and then found herself in a pitched battle for her family in which she ultimately triumphed.

There is no question: Maureen McCormick is a survivor. After fifty years, she has finally learned what it means to love the person you are, insight that has brought her peace in a happy marriage and as a mother. Here’s the Story is the empowering, engaging, shocking, and emotional tale of Maureen McCormick’s courageous struggle over adversity and her lifelong battle to come to terms with the idea of perfection—and herself.

Beautiful Binoculars5
I recently purchased these binoculars and am very happy. The image quality is excellant and they are very light. Also, the price was very reasonable. I am very happy using Amazon.com and they will be the first place I look.

Fantastic value! Excellent Binoculars!5
I purchased the Monarch’s to replace an aging pair (30 years old). The first thing that came to mind when I first used them was…WOW! The clarity is outstanding…especially for the price.

Many prior reviewers complained about the lens caps. I personally find them very functional and not at all what was portrayed. Perhaps I have an upgraded model, but the objective lens caps are attached to the barrel and one needs to simply unsnap the covers and twist them towards the middle of the binoculars where they sit nicely until you wish to put the covers back on. The the one-piece eyepiece cover (that everyone seems to complain about) has a serpentine plastic piece between each lens cover that applies a small amount of pressure to keep the lens covered when the binoculars are at rest on your chest and easily removes for viewing. If the user wishes, he can unhook the right-hand side of the cover and let the piece hang on the left-hand strap (otherwise it will be hanging in front of your nose!).

As other reviewers have noted, I now see things that I would have missed before. These binoculars are fantastic. Jupiter has been visible all summer (the brightest “star” in the night sky excepting the Moon) and I can actually see a few of Jupiter’s moons. I needed to steady the binoculars on a door frame, but what a sight!

For birding and other casual use the 8×42 are perfect. I personally don’t think I would have been happy with the 10×42’s as they would have produced a little too much jitter while viewing (I’m not as steady as I used to be).

And for those of you who criticize that the glasses are made in China, just peel the label off. There, now they’re made in Japan.

I highly recommend these binoculars. I am EXTREMELY pleased with these Nikon’s. If you have the chance to purchase these, DO IT — You won’t be sorry.

fantastic bins, highly recommended5
Lightweight. Lens caps are attached. Great for bird watching. Good in dim conditions. Fantastic value for money.

Graco Pack ‘n Play Playard with Twin Bassinet in Scout

Graco Pack ‘n Play Playard with Twin Bassinet in Scout

Handy and attractive5
I bought this for my daughter who is expecting twins. So although she has not yet had the chance to use it, it will be a very handy way to accomodate her two baby boys in a very small house. It looks quite sturdy enough to do the job.

Great product4
We received this for our twin girls and loved it! They slept together in one side for the first few months (we kept blankets, diapers, etc on the other side); then they each had a side but could still hear/sense each other which they seemed to like. It was a bit challenging the first few times to change the sheet with the bassinets but it did get better with practice. Liked that there were 2 bassinets so the girls could continue to be close togther. Would definitely recommend to someone expecting twins. The only time we travelled the girls were older so we were just using the bottom (and we had to use 2).

Very convenient!4
As the mother of twins, I found this product to be quite sturdy and reliable. Cleaning up major spitups was sometimes challenging, but, overall not too bad. Having a place where both of my (preemie) babies could be placed safely was very handy. Setup was easy and we’re still using the main section as a playard. The fact that one side has wheels made it even easier to use!

Excellent Crib5
I was impressed to see that this is actually made from solid wood. It looks great and was straight forward to put together. Keep the baby monitor on or the door open-since they make the slat openings wide enough that a baby won’t get jammed in, our little kicker has gotten herself in some awkward positions with each leg through a different slat. No worries so far of her getting hurt-I just pick her up, snuggle her for a few seconds and all is well. Overall I am really happy with this crib-Baby sleeps great having plenty of room to sprawl out.

Happy with this product5
Although our little bundle on joy isn’ here yet, we are very happy with this product. At 6 months pregnant, I was able to easily put this together on my own. Other reviews were correct in saying that the pieces of wood scratch and dent easily, but since I had read these ahead of time, I knew to expect it and was as careful as possible to avoid this. I would highly recommend this crib.

Buy it!4

Graco Swept Frame Pack ‘n Play with Bassinet & Changer in Betsey

Graco Swept Frame Pack ‘n Play with Bassinet & Changer in Betsey

Now I find Graco Swept Frame Pack ‘n Play with Bassinet & Changer in Betsey Yes, I think that interesting .

Best Pack ‘n Play I’ve Had4
I have had this for about 1 month and it is a great Pack ‘n Play. It looks great (have had several compliments), works well, and was not difficult to set up. The high changing table is a huge improvement over the ones level with the tops because now you don’t have to bend way over to change the baby. There are only a couple things that I would change on this product. First, I’d like the changing table to fold out of the way so the bassinet area is more accessible. With the canopy on and the changing table on, it is a little difficult slipping the baby into the bassinet and the view is obstructed. Second, if there was another little storage area (even a soft bag type thing on a side/by the changing table so as not to interfere with portability) to put some blankets/burp cloths/clothes/etc. in, it would be helpful. I got the product to have a “baby station” in each level of the house, but its usefulness is a little lower since I have to run to the nursery for a change of clothes. Lastly, it would be nice if it fit through the door frames to roll to different rooms. Overall, though, I would recommend this over any of the other 4-5 similar items I have had in the past.

Happy with Pack n Play4
I love this play yard! It is so cute, and it took my mom and I a short time to put it together. The only thing I wish were different is I wish the changer would come off a little easier and that the diaper holder could remain on the play yard when the changer is off. Other than those few things it is a great buy

LOVE IT!5
I can not say enough good things about this item! It has been a lifesaver for our household. I LOVE the changing area, which has a place for diapers and all the other stuff you need. I am really glad we bought it!
